I must begin by declaring that I am well aware of the fact that the High Priestess of fashion, Anna Wintour, has not changed her hairstyle since 1964. And yes, I am also aware that one of the great paramours of the stylist world, Grace Coddington, sports a less than charming atrocity of frizzy and ginger proportions. But for those of us who are not yet beyond the realms of criticism, the imminent change in seasons should be setting off the ye old hair-change alarm.

For my more observant contemporaries, the approaching trend du jour will come of no surprise. The re-emergence of shredded denim, mid-drifts and shoulder pads has already indicated what is about to ensue in hair salons this spring. In a nutshell? It’s inspired by the 80’s and it’s going to be BIG. But readers, before you whip out those teasers and crimpers please remember: this is a fashion revival, which fortunately means that the style is both more cultivated and deliciously languorous.

Those who resisted being branded by the ‘Year of the Bob’ in 2008 seem to be more desperate than ever to avoid being the echo of some else’s music. One extreme to another, it seems. Trends are dramatic and those not brave enough for the all-off pixie cut are encouraged to embrace length, volume, (and inevitably, hair extensions!).

Perhaps this is born out of some subconscious drive in the fashion world to locate that missing eponymous hairstyle from the eighties; the 70’s can claim the Fawcett Flip, the 90’s had The Rachel, and in recent naughties we praised the Pob (Posh & bob). Perhaps it’s just to make life post-Pob difficult. Perhaps it’s because Lady Gaga’s blonde conical disaster has had us running back to decades past,  or perhaps it’s simply because racing season is nigh and ladies are wanting a pretty do to match their pretty frock.
